What is a Floating Diamond Wedding Ring?

Diamond wedding rings come in all shapes and sizes but finding one that truly stands out can sometimes be difficult. A floating diamond ring is sure to capture your attention.

Floating diamond eternity rings are so called because the circle of diamonds appear to float in the air, as though there isn’t anything tethering them together. In this setting type, the focus is on the diamonds, their shape and sparkle.  Let’s take a look at this unique ring setting.

At first glance, you may wonder where the difference between a floating diamond eternity ring and a classic prong set eternity ring comes in.

But look closer and you’ll notice that a floating eternity wedding band is very different.

Most diamonds when set in an eternity setting will have either prongs or a channel to secure them in place. What this does is hold the diamond in its position, keeping it protected. However, the more metal visible, the less the focus on the diamond.

The floating diamond eternity setting has full focus on the diamond. Each diamond is individually set in a little ‘basket’ or holder with two prongs on either side keeping it secure. The diamonds look as though they’re floating on your finger, as opposed to being held within prongs.

The shape of each diamond is highlighted in the floating diamond ring setting. Notice how the diamonds are unhindered on the top and bottom sides. This allows the diamond’s shape to be accentuated.

Downsides of the Floating Diamond Wedding Ring

There are two main downsides to this setting but note that this isn’t unique to this particular type of setting. Every setting has its own pros and cons.

The first con is that the diamonds are more exposed than they would be in, say a channel eternity band. The beauty of the floating setting is in how it highlights each diamond, but this also increases the diamond’s exposure and the likelihood of a diamond getting knocked, loose or even dislodged. But this can happen with most types of settings out there. It’s important to have the ring checked periodically by a professional jeweler to ensure that each diamond is firmly in place.

The second disadvantage is that floating diamonds can be difficult to clean as there are many little cavities and spaces where dirt can get lodged. However, this is true of almost all types of eternity settings or any setting that contains many diamonds.

Is This Same as the Floating Halo Ring?

Floating halos are different to floating diamond rings. See this here.

A floating halo is not the same as a floating diamond ring. It simply features a diamond halo that appears to float above the band, and isn’t attached to the diamond. This is simply a type of halo setting, and doesn’t refer to the way the diamond is placed in its setting.
